Kauaʻi’s First Pride Parade
2019
In 2019, Los Angeles-based filmmaker Mark Miller visited Kaua‘i with a friend, exploring the sights and sounds of the Garden Isle.
When asked about the trip, Mark said:
“On our last day, we were invited to breakfast by our host, Steven Dick, who happened to be helping coordinate the island’s first Pride Parade. It was happening a couple of months later and he said it would be an extraordinary sight. With his help, we spoke with some key individuals involved who were willing to share their stories from this special occasion.”
The result is “Colors of Kauaʻi,” a beautiful short film that he and another friend, Nick Longo, made about this historic event and inspiring work of the community organization that created and continues to organize it annually, Kauai Pride Parade & Festival.
About the importance of Pride parades, Steven Dick said:
“The more exposure you give people, the more acceptance there is, and the more acceptance there is, the less struggle there is. And then people can focus on the things that really are important, like how to reach their potential.”
We’re grateful that Mark, Nick, and the Kauaʻi Pride Parade & Festival have given us permission to share the film and this inspiring history here.
