The Attic Bar

In the late 1920s, a small commercial structure was built on the corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Seaside Avenue in Waikiki. Enlarged and altered over time, it became a succession of restaurants, with the final one being the Royal Lanai from 1964.

On the second floor of the Royal Lanai was the Attic Bar, which opened in 1966 and remained in place until most of this block was demolished for the construction of the Waikiki Shopping Plaza which was completed in 1976. While the Attic Bar was probably not intentionally aimed at a LGBTQ+ clientele, it certainly was gay-friendly and was a popular gathering place for the community in its time. The restaurant’s managementcertainly would have supported the many gay men who were regulars at the bar, during a time when there was still the potential legal prosecution of homosexuality in Hawaii.(captions) The Royal Lanai restaurant seen from Kalakaua Avenue with Seaside Avenue on the right in Waikiki, 1972. The Attic Bar was on the upper level at the back of the building.
